Rhiannon Giddens is an American folk/roots singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She is the co-founder of the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops and six times Grammy nominee for her work as a soloist and collaborator. Her lifelong mission is to lift up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been erased, and to work toward a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins. She is featured in Ken Burns’ Country Music series, where she speaks about the African American origins of country music.
Francesco Turrisi is an Italian Grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist. He left his native Italy in 1997 to study jazz piano and early music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he obtained a Bachelor and a Master’s degree. Turrisi performs using the piano, accordion, harpsichord, organ, various lutes, cello banjo, frame and goblet drums. Having performed with jazz veterans Dave Liebman and Gianluigi Trovesi, Irish traditional sean-nós singer Roisin El Safty and flamenco star Pepe El Habichuela – it’s pretty safe to say that Turrisi is an artist defined by his musical wanderlust.
Together, Giddens and Turrisi create music that crush the barriers of genre, performing an eclectic blend of American old-time roots music and Central and Northwest European folk traditions. Their music is fluid, free and absolutely captivating from start to finish. We’re excited to be able to present you with the 5th track, ‘Black as Crow‘, from their latest album, ‘They’re Calling Me Home‘.
